I decided it was time to make the boys' furniture look a little better. I have read on other blogs about painting furniture so I decided to give it a try. I sanded the nightstands, then primed them with Kilz primer in a can. I sanded in between each coat then I spray painted. It looked great until I tried putting on polycrilac to protect the finish. It turned out all white, filmy and streaky. So annoying. I sanded them down but that took off some of the finish so I reprimered and repainted. I then bought the clear coat finish in the can. That also was streaky. I couldn't get a smooth finish. I don't know what I was doing wrong. I think it was about 10 coats of primer and 10 coats of paint by the time I was done with this simple, little project. Good thing I'm not a perfectionist. You can still see the streaks on the drawer fronts. No clear coat for the dresser below when I paint that. I guess if it chips I'll know to do something else.
I forgot to take a before picture but the nightstands look exactly like the dresser. Broken and missing knobs. Definitely screams 1980s. I like how it turned out. Hopefully the dresser will go faster since I already made all the mistakes.
